Pet Partner, Allen County SPCA provides Cat Housetraining Tips

November’s Pet Partner of the Month is Allen County SPCA, located in Allen County, Indiana.  Allen County SPCA has many cats available for adoption so they know a thing or two about house training.  They were kind enough to share their house training tips with our readers.

Litter Box Training

Allen County, explains that adoptable cats are usually litter trained, as their mothers’ tend to teach them at an early age where to use the bathroom.  Usually if you keep a cat isolated in an area where they have easy access to an appropriate litter box, instinct does the rest; they are very clean animals! 

If a cat stops using their litter box check with a veterinarian to rule out a possible medical issue.  If there are no medical issues, it’s also important to keep in mind that cats do not like drastic changes in their environment, such as a new baby, another pet, or moving.  The changes can make them upset causing the cat to not use their litter box. 

Proper House Behavior

Allen County also pointed out that some cats need to be trained on how to behave in a house.  There are many ways to stop your cat from scratching, climbing, knocking things over or getting on the counter.  First, Allen County suggests trimming nails often.  Also providing enough scratching posts and interactive toys can keep the cat busy and out of trouble. Cat owners find a gentle squirt of water to be very unsettling to the cat and may deter unwanted behavior when caught in the act.  Cats learn from positive reinforcement and redirection. For example; if the cat is scratching the couch you nicely direct the cat's attention to it's scratching post or toy instead.

Interview with Animal Welfare of Laurens County

This week we were lucky enough to talk with Apryl of Animal Welfare of Laurens County.  We asked a few questions regarding their experience with KIDS 'N' PETS and their adoption process.

1) What have you used KIDS ‘N’ PETS for? 

We use KIDS 'N' PETS to clean our puppy cages and the surrounding area.  It works great and smells good which really helps in a dog rescue.

2) How does your adoption process work? 

When a family sees a dog or puppy they're considering adopting they submit an application for adoption.  We check all their references, do a home visit if we feel it's necessary and the family signs an adoption contract and they take their pet home.

3) Before adopting a pet what do you think is the most important thing to consider? We strongly recommend doing a little research on the breed you're considering adopting. You should know the strong points as well as the breed's peculiarities and possible draw-backs before bringing the pet home.

4)  Any additional tips for people who are looking to adopt but also have kids? 

We don't recommend adopting a pet younger than about 3 months when you have toddlers in the home.  Little puppies have sharp nails and teeth and don't understand that human babies are easily scratched.  Also, human toddlers can be hard on very small or young puppies if they're not closely monitored at all times they're with the puppy.  Both types of 'babies' can easily damage the other.

Georgia Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation, Inc - Pet Partner

Georgia Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation, Inc is KIDS 'N' PETS' featured Pet Partner for September. We conducted a brief interview with Jessica from GCRR to get potty training tips and learn more about their pet adoption program!

What have you used KIDS ‘N’ PETS for?

We have used KIDS ‘N’ PETS in our welcome packs for new adopters. Also we have used it around the shelter especially in our meet and greet room to get the couch smelling and looking like new.

What is the most popular canine adopted at GCRR?

We adopt out a lot of different types of dogs from our shelter, so it is really hard to pin point what is the most popular dog is.

Before adopting a pet what do you think is the most important thing to consider?

The most important thing to consider is your lifestyle, then researching different breeds to find what dog will best fit into your lifestyle. Then talk to the organization you are adopting from about the individual dog to make sure they do in fact fit. Try to adopt a dog that matches your lifestyle, not the one that looks the best.

Any suggestion on things that need to be purchased right before or after the adoption?

It might be best for the adopter to wait until after the adoption to purchase items other than a quality food. However after the adoption make sure that you have a plan for making the dog feel at home and Safe. Some dogs do fine loose in a new environment but others really need an appropriately sized kennel to help them adjust to their new environment. And of course you need to be able to walk your dog so the essentials like a leash and collar help, but I know in our goodie bags we have tones of vouchers and coupons to help our adopters save money while spoiling there new addition to the family.

KIDS ‘N’ PETS New Location at Walmart

Every day we talk to customers who have a hard time finding KIDS ‘N’ PETS at Walmart.  We realize KIDS ‘N’ PETS is not the easiest product to find on Walmart’s shelves but we do our best to work with Walmart to increase visibility.  Every 6 months Walmart reviews the products they sell on their shelves. When products are reviewed some products shift around.  The most recent review caused KIDS ‘N’ PETS location in the cleaning section to change. If you have a hard time finding KIDS ‘N’ PETS in the cleaning aisle near the mops and brooms, here are a few tips:

• Ask an employee that works in the cleaning section (Walmart calls it the Chemical Department) for the location of KIDS ‘N’ PETS. 
• Bring an empty bottle with you so the employee can find KIDS ‘N’ PETS easier, Walmart carries many products so it makes it difficult for employees to keep up with all of the products.

Going to the Dogs - Pet Partner

Going to the Dogs is KIDS 'N' PETS' featured Pet Partner for August. We conducted a brief interview with Kersten from Going to the Dogs to get potty training tips and learn more about their pet adoption program!

What have you used KIDS ‘N’ PETS for? 

We have used Kids N Pets for adoption events when cleaning up accidents from the puppies, and have also used it in foster homes for puppymill dogs in potty training that may need more "frequent cleanups"

What is the most popular question potential adopters ask?  

The most popular question from potential adopters is actually "is it hard to give up your foster?"  We always laugh and say that it may be tough because we form bonds with our fosters; however the idea of 1 dog being adopted in order to save many more is far more rewarding...and the foster dog leaving is guaranteed to have a wonderful life after all they had previously gone through and that is much more to give them than to not let them go.

Before adopting a pet what do you think is the most important thing to consider?

What the dog's breed/character/personality/activity in accordance to what your family lifestyle is?  Many people have "ideas" of what breed they want based on its appearance or popularity; however if you analyze a home you may find that the particular breed or personality of the dog they think is a fit for them, may not be the case...they may need to consider a more active or mellow, less social or more social dog than the one they had planned.  Many people put the idea of "mixed breeds" on the backburner, but in many of the cases, those dogs have the least rate of behavioral and medical concerns in my experience, so they turn out to be fantastic choices with a great blend of many great characteristics of many different breeds.  Many online resources can guide a family to a list of things they should look for based on their lifestyle and then simply going to a rescue or shelter to meet those dogs meeting some of that criteria will help a family choose a better fit than sticking to a specific breed or "look" of a dog.

Any potty training tips?

Egg Timer!!!  When you get a new dog, not even just a puppy...it is a very different transition for a dog to instantly know your schedule.  Starting slow and consistent is the best way to get this accomplished.  Put an egg timer on for 20 min and slowly increase the time over 2 weeks.  If you have an accident or pitfall, go back down and repeat the last time...NEVER expect a puppy or senior to hold its bladder more than 6hrs...it is unrealistic and will set yourself up for frustrations.  Aside from an egg timer, crate training is the most rewarding training that is not just positive for potty training, but many other things such as separation anxiety, having a safe place, and more.
